History of the Reformed Church in the U S in the Nineteenth Century James I James Isaac 18501924 Good 9781363080182 Books
James I Good was an invaluable historian whose research into the early German Reformed Church laid the groundwork for later scholars attempting to tell the story of the German Reformed Church, the Reformed Church in the United States, the Evangelical and Reformed Church, and the United Church of Christ. What makes his work of particular interest is that he represented the "Old Reformed Church," in contrast to the Mercersburg Theology and Liturgy in the "Low Church vs High Church" controversy of the nineteenth century. In response to the work coming out of the seminary at Mercersburg and later the Lancaster Theological Seminary, Good was part of the Ursinus School of Theology located first at Collegeville, Pennsylvania, then at Philadelphia, and then in Dayton, Ohio..Good's account of the work of the German Reformed Church in the 19th century is thorough but told with a distinct prejudice. If this is kept in mind, this history of his can be very useful. I am grateful that it has been reprinted in a form that is affordable. The Rev. Judith A. Meier, OCC
